Independent Studies

independent studies
WHAT IS IT? Independent Studies is an alternate method of study that allows students to meet high school graduation requirements.

DO INDEPENDENT STUDIES STUDENTS GET A REGULAR SAN LORENZO VALLEY HIGH DIPLOMA? Yes. This is the only alternative program that gives students this opportunity.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Students have regularly scheduled meetings with a fully credentialed teacher once a week. For example one might meet every Tuesday at 9:00am. Assignments for the past week are reviewed and graded and assignments are made for the upcoming week.

IS THERE A SET CURRICULUM? Yes, in most cases students use the same books that students use in regular high school classes. Assignments are often similar to regular high school assignments, but can be individualized to meet specific student needs. Each required Independent Studies class has a written curriculum.

HOW DO INDEPENDENT STUDIES STUDENTS EARN CREDITS? A semester class is worth 75 hours of assignments. A student who does 5 hours of assigned work per week in a specific subject would complete that class in 15 weeks. Completion of classes can be accelerated by doing more hours of homework per week. For example 15 hours of homework per week would allow a student to complete a class in 5 weeks.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
An Independent Studies student must complete a minimum of 20 hours of home work per week in order to remain in good standing.

Independent Studies students are eligible to participate in all San Lorenzo Valley High School extra-curricular activities such as athletics, drama productions etc.
