SPECIAL EDUCATION
The Special Education Department offers classes in English, math, science, and social studies. These classes follow the state curriculum and are modified to meet the needs of students with various learning disabilities. The Special education department also offers support in general education classes by placing Para educators in the general curriculum. In some cases the special education department will place a second teacher in class for extra support and create a team teaching environment.
MATH
Career Awareness
Grade Level 9-12
Length 1 Year

This class is designed in conjunction with the cougar cafe’. The class
focus is vocational and functional math skills. Students learn money skills
as well work on basic computation practice including addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division of whole numbers fractions and decimals. The
class culminates these skills so students can apply them to real world life
situations. Teaching units include, checking accounts, shopping, menu math
and budgeting.
Math 9-12 (RSP)
Grade Level 9-12
Length 1 Year

This is a Remedial General Math course that is used in preparation for Algebra.
Number Sense, Fractions, Decimals, and Integers, are all areas of focus.
This is a small group class with lots of support from staff. Students are
encouraged to develop strategies to help themselves become successful in
math.
Geography
Grade Level 9
Length 1 Semester

This course is the study of the earth and its people. Covered in the course
are basic cultural and physical geographic concepts with which to better
understand our relationship with the earth and our interdependence with other
people. Our study will focus on the five fundamental themes of geography:
location, place, movement, region and interaction between people and the
environment. ? This course is designed to support students with active IEP's
who need small group, differentiated, and multiple-intelligence instruction.
This course is aligned with the standards and supports IEP History Goals.
World History
Grade Level: 10
Length 1 year

This course is a one-year study of the modern world. We will investigate
events that have occurred in the last two centuries to see how they have
led to situations we find ourselves in today, and evaluate how knowledge
of the past can guide use in making sensible decisions. In this historical
context the following concepts will be stressed: geography, political systems,
interdependence, change, ecology, economics, culture, and the worth of the
individual. This course is designed to support students with active IEPs
who need small group, differentiated, and multiple-intelligence instruction.
This course is aligned with the standards and supports IEP History Goals.
US History
Grade Level 11

This course explores causes and events of US History from post reconstruction
to the present and emphasizes political, social, economic, and cultural forces
that have shaped the development of this country. Students recognize historical
patterns, examine critical issues, and study the impact of key individuals
as they relate to national growth and international influence. ? This course

and multiple-intelligence instruction. This course is aligned with the standards
and supports IEP History Goals.
U.S. Government
Grade Level: 12
Length: 1 semester

This course covers the structure and function of the American political system.
Topics include the Constitution, electoral and legislative process, and current
political issues. This course is designed to support students with active
IEPs who need small group, differentiated, multiple-intelligence instruction.

Economics:
Grade Level: 12
Length: 1 semester

In this course students discover what influences our economic system, how
it works, and where it fits into the global economy. Themes of the course
are "The American Dream,” scarcity, capitalism versus socialism,
and equality of opportunity in a capitalist system. This course is designed
to support students with active IEPs who need small group, differentiated,
multiple-intelligence instruction. This course is aligned with standards
and supports IEP Goals.

This course is for Special Education students who struggle with English Language
Arts. Reading is a remedial class that focuses on the basic Language Arts
skills. Reading Fluency, Reading Comprehension, and Written Expression.
English 9

A foundation of English (English 9) introduces a variety of genres of literature & writing,
as well as a yearlong study of grammar and vocabulary in accordance with
state standards. Literary units include short stories, non-fiction, descriptive
vignettes, novels, plays, poetry, and Greek mythology. Students write narrative,
descriptive, analytical,
comparison/contrast, persuasive, and research essays, as well as business
letters and creative writing. During the first semester, novels and plays
include: Of Mice and Men, The Old Man and the Sea, The Odyssey, and A House
on Mango Street. During the second semester, novels and plays include: Romeo & Juliet,
To
Kill a Mockingbird, and A Separate Peace.
This course is designed to support students with active IEPs needing small
group differentiated instruction. It is aligned to state content standards
and supports IEP ELA Goals. This course fulfills SLVHS English Literature
diploma requirements, but
does not meet UC requirements.
English 10
Grade Level 10
Length 1 Year

World Literature (10th grade English) considers common themes in literature
and explores how they are represented in seven different world regions. Students
read poems, short stories, plays, and novels. Essay styles include: analytical,
narrative, persuasive, comparison/contrast, interpretive, and research. World
Literature also includes as a yearlong study of grammar and vocabulary in
accordance with state standards. During the first semester, novels and plays
may include: Cry the Beloved Country, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, The
Tempest, Midsummer’s Night Dream, Julius Caesar, Lord of the Flies.
During the second semester, novels and plays may include: Antigone, Woman
Warrior, Hiroshima, All Quiet on the Western Front, One Day in the Life of
Ivan Dinesovich, A Doll’s House, and Animal Farm.
This course is designed to support students with active IEPs needing small group differentiated instruction. It is aligned to state content standards and supports IEP ELA Goals. This course fulfills SLVHS English Literature diploma requirements, but does not meet UC requirements.
English 11
Grade Level 11

American Literature/English 11 is a one-year course. American Literature
focuses on a study of the development of the American character in literature
and the social, philosophical, and historical movements that created it.
Students read poems, short stories, plays, and novels. Throughout the year
students will read and interpret American Literature, review practical skills,
and further develop writing and speaking skills. This course is designed
to support students with active IEPs who need small group, differentiated
instruction. This course is aligned with standards and supports IEP ELA Goals.
This course fulfills SLVHS American Literature diploma requirements, but
does not meet UC requirements.
Textbooks and Novels may include: The Language of Literature/American Literature,
The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The
Grapes of Wrath, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Great Gatsby, The Heart
is a Lonely Hunter, Catcher in the Rye, Hamlet.
English
12
Grade Level 12

English 12 is a one-year course with the first semester focusing on Chronology
of English Literature and the second semester focusing on Themes in English
Literature. Chronology of English Literature will follow a chronology of
English literature from Anglo-Saxon to contemporary English literature. Students
will read poems and short stories from each time period. Themes of English
Literature include a study of English literature and its authors through
a thematic approach. Throughout the year students will read and interpret
English literature, review practical skills, and further develop writing
and speaking skills. This course is designed to support students with active
IEPs who need small group, differentiated instruction. This course is aligned
with standards and supports IEP ELA Goals. This course fulfills SLVHS English
Literature diploma requirements, but does not meet UC requirements.
Textbooks and Novels may include: Literature & Language/English Literature,
Macbeth, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Brave New World, Frankenstein,
Things Fall Apart, and Heart Of Darkness.
Life
Skills
Grade Level 9-12

The focus of the Life Skills class is to prepare students for independent
living. In this class students learn about communicating with others, stress
management, creative leisure time, staying healthy, looking for and keeping
a job, handling money, being a wise consumer, living on their own, being
a good citizen and obeying laws.
Vocational Education
Grade Level 9-12
Length 1 Year
Prerequisite IEP Team Decision and Special Education eligibility
This class prepares Special Education students for the work world. Students
in the Vocational Education class get job experience by working in the Cougar
Café. These students also have opportunities to work within the High
School, by assisting the P.E. Department in maintaining vending machines
used for fundraising. Students may also work in the community for local businesses.
Students gain a greater understanding of teamwork, responsibility on the
job, and developing vocational skills,
Health
Grade Level: 9?
Length: 1 semester?
Prerequisite IEP Team Decision
As a course required for graduation, Health offers students an opportunity
to examine a wide variety of health topics and issues. Class activities will
be directed toward self-evaluation, teen health issues, and health skills
practice. Topics to be covered are nutrition/fitness, emotion/social health,
CPR/first aid, sexuality education, and drug education.
Directed Studies
Grade Level 9-12
Length 1 Semester
Prerequisite IEP Team Decision
The directed studies class is available only to students with current I.E.P’s.
The class supports students in being successful in their mainstream academic
classes. Students may also use the class to work on their individual I.EP.
goals. This class can count as elective credit.
