REGIONAL OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAM (ROP)
(Practical Arts)

The purpose of ROP is to offer free or low cost job training to teach students the marketable skills to qualify for jobs in fields of their choice. High school students may also earn credits towards graduation for taking ROP courses. ROP works closely with local employers and many classes offer on-the-job-training. While there is no formal placement process, follow-up studies show students who complete program have a high rate of job placement. ROP work experience credit is also available.

REGISTRATION: High school students enroll with their high school counselors through the Career Center Coordinator. No enrollment fees are required for high school students.

ADMISSION: Most classes are open to students in 11th and 12 grade, student’s age 16 or older, and adults. Credit toward high school graduation is available for all courses according to performance and attendance. College credit may be awarded for specific courses by either transfer verification or petition.

BUS TRANSPORTATION: Santa Cruz Transit bus passes may be available to high school students for transportation to and from ROP classes only and can be obtained from the Career Center Specialist.
The following is a list of the pathways and some of the ROP classes that are available both on and off SLV's campus. Brochures are available describing over thirty classes offered all over Santa Cruz County. Students should contact the Career Center Specialist or Guidance Counselor for complete information. Each semesters course offerings vary according to the availability of instructors and student interest.

AQUACULTURE 2
Grade Level: 11-12, or at least 16 years of age
Length: 1 year
Aquaculture 2 is UC Requirement Fulfilled: G (Science Elective)
Aquaculture 2 is the capstone class for the Watershed Academy. It is a year long, hands on, project-based course, where students apply math and science concepts to a project-based curriculum with “real world” applications. Subject content includes aquaculture, agriculture, aquatic chemistry, aquaponics, chemistry, biotechnology, genetics, parasitology, waste treatment, water reclamation, ichthyology, engineering, environmental ecology, resource management, marketing economics, watershed and habitat management. The students will do a variety of related labs involving chemistry, physics, biology and all levels of math. The students will culture various aquatic organisms in the laboratory, write technical reports, design and create aquaculture systems, ROV (remote operated vehicle) and participate in field trips to local aquaculture facilities and universities. COMPUTER GRAPHICS
Grade Level: 11-12, or at least 16 years of age
Length: 1 year

Computer Graphics explores the drawing techniques and tools used in computer art and graphics. The historical, social and cultural analyses of art are explored and analyzed. Emphasis is placed upon the practical aspects of commercial art and how this art is used in publishing, design and illustration, photography, multimedia and Internet web presentations. A systematic and structured approach is used to complete a wide range of projects of increasing difficulty on various types of media.

MARKETING

Economics of Marketing is an elective college prep course designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to enter and succeed in the world of the marketer. An in-depth study of the economy of the 21st century and aspects of marketing are examined. Economic and marketing concepts, such as database management, advanced communications strategies, decision-making for the market place, and resource allocation and product distribution, are emphasized. Students will explore the utilization of traditional advertising, integrated marketing communications, and new media in local, regional, national and global markets. The course will cover such topics as: advertising campaigns, ad agencies, copy writing, the impact of new technology, e-commerce, interactive electronic media, corporate positioning, branding, consumer behavior, media sales, marketing management, and the legal and ethical considerations of the industry.

SPORTS RELATED OCCUPATIONS
Grade Level: 10-12
Length: 1 semester
This is a hands on class to acquire skills in various sports related occupations. Areas of focus are sports science, sports medicine, sports management and physical education. VIDEO PRODUCTIONS
Grade Level: 11-12, or at least 16 years of age
Length: 1 year
The courses will include instruction in all aspects of TV and video production ac applied in education, industry and business. The course includes extensive lab work. Instructional units includes: Introduction to present systems and regulation; script formats and plans; video cameras and lenses; portable camera and accessories; camera composition; operation of VCRs, VTRs, and monitors; video editing sound use; use of graphics; microphone and mixer application; theory of lighting; roles of the director, floor manger, sound or camera person, and other crew members. Job site or community board projects included.
