ADDITIONAL ELECTIVES

HEALTH
Grade Level: 9
Length: 1 semester
Prerequisite: None
As a course required for graduation, Health offers students an opportunity to examine a wide variety of health topics and issues. Class activities will be directed toward self evaluation, teen health issues, and health skills practice. Topics to be covered are nutrition/fitness, emotion/social health, CPR/first aid, sexuality education, and drug education.

TEAM WORLD HISTORY-WORLD LITERATURE
Grade Level: 10
Length: 1 year
UC Requirement Fulfilled: A & B
The English and Social Studies department offers an integrated block of World Literature and World History. The instructors link related themes, activities and assignments to give students the opportunity to make chronological connections between the world they inhabit and their study of history, and literature. Students benefit from the increased communication between their instructors as they have the same peers in both English and History, and have an opportunity to develop a rapport with their peers and instructors.

TEAM AMERICAN HISTORY-AMERICAN LITERATURE
Grade Level: 11
Length: 1 year

The English and Social Studies department offers an integrated block of American Literature and American History. The instructors link related themes, activities and assignments to give students the opportunity to make chronological connections between the world they inhabit and their study of history, and literature. Students benefit from the increased communication between their instructors as they have the same peers in both English and History, and have an opportunity to develop a rapport with their peers and instructors. These linked courses are offered 1st and 2nd periods and 75 students are accepted into the courses.

PATHWAYS INTERNSHIP
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: 1 semester or more
Prerequisite: Students need to determine their own site, on or off –campus and have a designated supervisor.
Internship credit is available to students who wish to explore a career pathway. Students need to keep a daily log of learning experiences, complete a SCANS analysis, an ESLR analysis and a project that can serve as a career artifact for the senior exit portfolio.

STUDENT COUNCIL
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: 1 year
Students are elected in the spring for the positions of 4 class officers. (Freshmen are elected in September). Fifteen ASB officers are also elected in the spring.

STUDENT AIDE
Grade Level: 11-12
Length: 1 semester
Prerequisite: The ability to type is desirable for some placements.
Working under the direct supervision of teachers and classified staff in the elementary, intermediate and high schools, students will gain practical experience by serving as teacher aides, clerical aides, laboratory assistants, or child care aides. Candidates must consult their counselor and must be assigned a position through the Career Center.

WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION
Grade Level: 11-12
Length: 1 semester (may take more than once)
Prerequisite: Students must be in 11th or 12th grade, be 16 years of age or older, and have legal employment.
Students in jobs with educational value may earn up to 10 credits per semester. Grades are based upon job performance, seminar attendance and homework assignments. Candidates must consult their counselor and must be contracted through the Career Center. The work experience program provides a combination of approved, paid employment, and related skills instruction. The program is designed to develop desirable work habits, attitudes and occupational skills.

YEARBOOK/JOURNALISM
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: 1 – 2 semesters
UC Requirement Fulfilled: F (Journalism component is allowed for 1 semester of UC F requirement)
Prerequisite: Students must get a "B" or better in their most recently completed English class and must have a teacher's recommendation.

Students develop and compose the school yearbook and newspaper, after learning basic, intermediate, and advanced concepts of yearbook design: paste-ups, photography, composition, layout, and news writing: headlines, leads, news, features, sports, and editorial writing. Fulfills Practical Arts graduation requirement.

SPECIAL EDUCATION
The Special Education Department offers classes in English, math, science, and social studies. These classes follow the state curriculum and are modified to meet the needs of students with various learning disabilities.

DIRECTED STUDIES
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: 1 semester
Prerequisite: I.E.P. Team Decision
The Directed Studies class is available only to students with current I.E.P.s. The class supports students in being successful in their mainstream academic classes. Students may also use the class to work on their individual I.E.P. goals
