FINE ARTS

This is a fun class for any student who wants to try their hands at drawing, watercolors, pastels, acrylic, scratchboard, and more. You don't need to know how to draw. It's a class with a relaxed environment, you'll learn about artists and different kinds of art trends. The art elements and principles of design will be the foundation of your work. You will use colored pencil, watercolor, pen, and pencil techniques. The drawing skills you will learn will help you to draw people animals, and cartoon characters, and environments to set them in. ¨($50 lab fee is required to cover projects you will take home, in addition you will be provided with a set of brushes and a 100 page sketchbook. Scholarships are available.

ADVANCED ART

Fulfills the Practical Arts Requirement
Prerequisite: Any beginning level art class.
The major emphasis of this class is development of a personal style and knowledge of drawing and painting techniques. Class assignments will include still life, symbolism, allegory, and surrealism. A strong multicultural foundation adds interest to the projects. Evaluation of the artistic process and how it is reflected in your work will be stressed. The works of master artists will be studied. A field trip to San Francisco' s Museums will be included. Students will complete a 2'x3' mural to be hung on the school building as a final project. This class can be repeated for credit a number of times with the consent of the teacher. Student must have passed Art Awareness with a C+ grade or higher or have the permission of the instructor.
($50.00 lab fee is required to cover paint, brushes and canvas.) Scholarships are available.

CERAMICS
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: 1 year
UC Requirement: FulfilledVisual and Performing Arts (A-G)

(there is a course fee of $25 per semester or $45 for the year. This covers all materials and tools.)
This is a yearlong course, primarily hands on for both the student and the instructor. Basic instruction is done through demonstartions performed by the instructor. Emphasis is placed on project-based learning. Students are encouraged to explore new concepts and are challenged to push the limits of their own imaginations as well as the medium itself. Cooperative learning is emphasized in the classroom as well as participating in outside teaching activities with other schools. Students are shown and required to participate in the entire process of ceramics increasing their awareness and appreciation of the work involved. Work accomplished by students is displayed not only in the classroom but also in a formal show for parents and staff each year.

CHOIR
Grade Level: 9-12

Choir is a group activity course designed to provide musical study through the medium of vocal music. Students will rehearse and perform a variety of musical styles. In addition, there is daily work to improve vocal technique and music reading. Outside performance is required.

ADVANCED BAND
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: 1 year

Prerequisite: Students must audition and have the instructor’s approval.
This course is designed to give students of band instruments the opportunity to continue their study. The intent of the course is to help the student become more musically literate and proficient on her/his instrument through performance of band literature and exercises covering a diversity of styles. The activities include those generally associated with bands: marching, concerts, athletic program support, school programs and public relations activities.

DRAMA

In this course the student will study various facets of theater arts. Acting techniques, including voice control, character analysis, interpretation of dialogue, pantomime, and movement will be explored and employed in assigned scenes. Incorporated into the course are units on the history of theater, scenic design and construction, make-up, costume design and construction, lighting, publicity and stage production crews. Homework is assigned on a daily/weekly basis.

DRAMA PRODUCTIONS

PHOTOGRAPHY
Grade Level: 10-12
Length: 1-year
Prerequisite: None
This course is designed to introduce the student to an artistic exploration of the visual arts using photography as the media. Attention will be given to the student's recognition and application of the relationships found within the expressive communication of the arts. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to work independently with cameras, scanners, printers and computers. Students will compile a digital and real portfolio that can be used to demonstrate their abilities for college entrance or employment in the visual art field. This course is designed to introduce the student to the concepts of photography. Students will be able to independently work with picture taking editing and printing photographs equipment. Scholarships are available. ($75 lab fee

VIDEO PRODUCTIONS

Description: View Productions is a year long, hands on course in which students are expected to actively participate in all aspects of the class including: pre-production planning, writing and script editing, on-camera acting , technical work, critical analysis, post-production editing. It is a course designed to teach students the history of television and its place in society, its influence, both creative and original, as well as commercial. Students are expected to create and produce original video projects that examine specific genres; i.e., documentary, narrative, expository, entertainment. Students will understand and effectively use standard pre-production techniques such as: storyboards, shot lists, script writing, identification of the target audiences, presentation of project proposals, creation budgets and schedules and learn to use video and digital video cameras, lights and audio to effectively communicate an idea and tell a story while effectively using both linear and non-linear platforms. Further, students will learn to distinguish between poor and quality projects and to demonstrate the ability to produce quality programming, as well as take responsibility for the programs that are produced. The class also will provide training for occupations in the television and video fields and students will learn the kind and quality of production work that is necessary for successful entry into the video job market. For students intent on attending college, the course will provide background to help the student succeed in the areas of television production, marketing, fine and performing arts, film, and multimedia.

PRACTICAL ARTS

Word Processing is a course for students to develop their computer skills. The course emphasizes computer alphabetic keyboarding skills and developing speed and accuracy. In addition, students learn word processing concepts by preparing documents (compositions, letters, reports, etc.) for personal use.
