NHS Membership Selection Information (pdf) and NHS Membership Recommendation Form (pdf)

Two honors clubs are available for students: If your student is enrolled in college prep classes and is planning to attend a university or college, we urge you to encourage him or her to become a member of either or both honors clubs. Membership information is
available at meetings announced in the Daily Bulletin, or by phoning the CSF and NHS advisors at 335-4425.

CSF is the most prestigious academic honors club recognized statewide. Members are encouraged to contribute to the school and community through tutoring services. Student officers usually organize at least one cultural field trip per year and one fund-raiser, which contributes to field trip expenses and small club scholarships.

The system, which determines whether a student graduates as a "Life Member", or a "100% Member" is rather strict and complex: To qualify, students must achieve a total of ten points for the grades achieved in all their classes. A letter grade of "A" = 3 points, while a grade of "B" = 1 point. However, a " B" grade in an AP or UC-approved Honors course = 2 points. A "C" = 0 points and any grade of "D" or "F" automatically disqualifies a student."Students must have seven points in specific List 1 or List 2, A List, University of California, "college prep" academic courses (see COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS in this guide) and the other three points can derive from List 3 or B List courses as well as other electives. (See the CSF application and Course Listings above.)

Students are eligible to join at the beginning of the second semester freshman year as honorary members. Students who have been dues paying members for four semesters, including a semester of senior grades, are considered "Life Members" and will receive honors at the Senior Awards ceremony and at graduation. Students earn certificates, gold cords, and gold tassels. Those who have been dues paying members for seven semesters are considered "100% Members" and receive an additional certificate.

NHS, though founded in 1921, is a new honors club for our student body. NHS recognizes academic achievement while encouraging characteristics considered essential to citizens in a democratic society. Membership is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. NHS differs from CSF in three ways: 1) it is a national organization; 2) it’s academic requirements are less stringent than those of CSF; however, 3) it emphasizes and expects involvement, participation, and leadership in school and community activities.

Through NHS chapter service activities, members will maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection. Hence, membership is considered both an honor and a commitment. In addition, as with CSF membership, college admissions officers often regard NHS membership as a valid indicator of success after high school graduation. Interested students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher submit an information sheet summarizing their activities along with an essay that demonstrates
how they exercise leadership, service, and character. In addition, a parental (or guardian's) endorsement and two recommendations are also requested. A faculty council, who then makes the final selection, reviews this information. After the faculty council has made its selections, the advisors invite those students to become members. Elected officers determine the initiation ceremony and organize field trips and service activities. Senior dues-paying members receive blue and gold tassels and a certificate at
Senior Awards.
