Absences
Attending school regularly and learning as much as possible are very important to a student’s future. Students should only be absent when too sick to attend or because of an extreme family emergency. San Lorenzo Valley High School considers attendance and class participation to be of such importance that a strict attendance policy is enforced. Students must attend school regularly and come to class on time with all material required by the teacher. All absences should be verified with legal excuse for compulsory education. Whenever possible, off-campus appointments should be scheduled after school.
At SLVHS we value instructional time and believe that a student’s learning is impacted by poor attendance. A student spends approximately 90 hrs in EACH of his or her classes per semester. If a student accumulates 5 or more unexcused absences in one class (5%) his/her grade will be dropped one full grade.
In lieu of the grade drop the student has the option to serve the hours required and once those hours are completed the student will maintain the grade he/she earned from the teacher. This is for unexcused absences only. Therefore it is imperative that absences that are supposed to be excused actually get excused with the attendance office. Absences will only be excused during the one week grace period.
If a student has 15 or more total unexcused absences an attendance conference (SART) will be scheduled by the Assistant Principal. If absences do not improve the student will be referred to the county attendance review board (SARB).
School Messenger
An automated phone caller will notify parents/guardians nightly of any period absence for that current school day.
Clearing Absences
A parent/guardian should call the Attendance Line for any absence within 1 week. A signed note indicating which days are excused will also suffice. Calls may be made at any time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week by phoning 335-3646.
When calling in or submitting a written excuse, please include:
- Student’s name
- Date(s) and/or period(s) of absence
- Specific reason for absence
- Daytime phone number of parent/guardian
- Parent/guardian signature on notes.
IF THE UNEXCUSED ABSENCE IS NOT CLEARED WITHIN THE ONE WEEK GRACE PERIOD THE ABSENCE WILL REMAIN UNEXCUSED. THE ONLY WAY TO AVOID A GRADE DROP WILL BE TO SERVE THE TIME OWED.
Tardies
Tardies are very disruptive to students and teachers in class. Tardies also inhibit a student’s ability to fully benefit from daily instruction. Students loitering in the hallways distract the learning in the classrooms.
Consequences:
5 tardies in one class = 2 hours
15 tardies overall = 8 hours
Failure to serve the assigned time will result in a grade drop in each of the classes that has excessive tardies.
Hall Pass
In order for students to be in the hallways during class time they must either have a note from one of the offices or their hall pass (found in this planner). Campus Supervisors will check to see if the student has permission to be out of class. If a student does not have a class, but is on campus s/he must work in the library or quietly on the lawn.
